Biography[]

Barney Matthews was a black man who appeared to be in his late thirties or early forties during the early 1990s. He worked as an orderly at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

One of the most infamous patients under his care was the noted psychiatrist and cannibal Doctor Hannibal Lecter. When the F.B.I. sent junior agent Clarice Starling to the hospital to interview Lecter, Barney advised her on all of the safety precautions that were required for being in Lecter's presence. Despite Lecter's loathing of hospital administrator Doctor Frederick Chilton, he appeared to have liked Barney.

In the years following Lecter's escape, the hospital eventually shut down. Barney had amassed a collection of memorabilia relating to Lecter, which he began selling to a man named Mason Verger.
