Baja is a peninsula in Northwestern Mexico. Its land mass separates the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of California. The peninsula extends 1,247 kilometres (775 mi) from Mexicali, Baja California in the north to Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur in the south. The peninsula is separated from mainland Mexico by the Gulf of California and the Colorado River. There are four main desert areas on the peninsula: the San Felipe Desert, the Central Coast Desert, the Vizcaíno Desert and the Magdalena Plain Desert.

The city bustling with tourists, including Americans celebrating a wedding, and the popular Rosarito Beach Hotel was at full capacity. Like in many other cities, rumors of the sickness were rampant, sparking some fear among residents. While Mr. and Mrs. Stowe were aware of the rumors regarding the government wanting to closing the border, Elena tried to calm their fears, reducing them to Internet gossip, but Elena herself was aware of the potential threat behind the sickness.

Valle de Guadaulupe is a village located in Baja California, Mexico, and best known for its wineries, vineyards, and annual harvest festival. It is also home to the Abigail vineyard, where Thomas Abigail and his family and servants live peacefully behind the estate's walls.
