An Angel of Death is a supernatural figure that has its origins in the Hebrew religion, and later, Christianity. Horror fiction has played with the concept as well over the years, often taking great liberties with its interpretation in contrast to religious dogma. An Angel of Death is typically classified as a destroyer Angel, such as the one sent down by God to wipe out all of the firstborn children in Egypt during that whole Passover affair as chronicled in the book of Exodus. This angel was later attributed to the Archangel Michael. Another destroying angel from the New Testament is Abaddon, who is referred to in the book of Revelations.
The personification of Death itself, often seen as part of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse, is also attributed to an Angel of Death. This concept of an Angel of Death has been explored in shows such as Supernatural and Sleepy Hollow.
