"Morticia and the Psychiatrist" is the second episode of season one of the television comedy series The Addams Family. It was directed by Jean Yarbrough with a script written by Hannibal Coons and Harry Winkler. It first aired on ABC on September 25th, 1964.

Synopsis[]

Morticia begins to notice that Pugsley has been acting very strangely as of late. She is shocked to find him wearing a Boy Scouts uniform and cannot understand why he would wear such a thing. Gomez placates her and doesn't think too much of it, but their concerns grow deeper when Pugsley skips lunch in order to play outside. They peek out the window and see him playing with a puppy. Tish and Gomez are so distraught that they cannot even bring themselves to say the creature's name, and must spell out the word P-U-P-P-Y to Uncle Fester.

At their wits' end, they decide to seek consultation from a psychiatrist named Doctor Harold Black. Morticia has a good vibe about him since his last name is Black. They tell the doctor that their son is dressing in outlandish attire and keeping strange pets. Not understanding the true nature of what is happening, Doctor Black suggests that it is just a phase and they should cater to Pugsley's behavior until it runs its course.

They both attempt to do this, but it ultimately fails. Gomez is upset that Pugsley doesn't even seem to enjoy blowing up trains anymore. They have Doctor Black conduct a follow-up examination which requires him to visit the house. Taking note of the Addams family's strange décor, he tells them that they have been going overboard with trying to placate his interests.

Doctor Black visits Pugsley in his room while the rest of the family waits outside. Uncle Fester climbs a tree so he can watch what is going on. As the Doctor talks with Pugsley, the boy's normal behavior begins to return. He pantomimes various acts of violence that he enjoys which includes blowing stuff up, stabbing things and shooting things with machine guns. This unexpected shift in behavior proves too much for Doctor Black and he hurriedly leaves the residence. Morticia and Gomez are relieved to see that their son is back to normal.
