Plot[]
Hideous monsters have attacked the country and are able to target victims through their acute sense of sound. As such, survivors must be ever wary about making even the slightest sound, or else risk being slaughtered by a monster. Evelyn and Lee Abbott have a deaf adolescent daughter, Regan, which actually aides them, as they are all well-versed in sign language.
The Abbotts attempt to return home after foraging for supplies, but toddler Beau sets off a toy rocket ship and a monster swoops down upon him. A year passes and the rest of the family have succeeded in staying alive. Evelyn is now pregnant and Lee labors to ensure that all safety precautions have been taken.
Regan blames herself for Beau's death, which sets her at odds against her parents. Lee tries to build her a new hearing aid system, but Regan is frustrated and wants nothing to do with it. Lee takes his younger child, Marcus, out to a loud waterfall to go fishing. The sound of the crashing water is loud enough so that they can speak freely. Later, Lee encounters and elderly man who is standing before the eviscerated body of a woman - presumably his wife. Not wishing to go on without her, the man lets out a scream to attract the monsters, who then kill him.
Evelyn eventually gives birth to a son. Miraculously, she is able to do so without making a sound, and keeps a level head even as a monster is skulking through her house. While Regan and Marcus are racing around the woods, Regan discovers that close proximity to a monster triggers her hearing device, emitting loud feedback that causes both she and the monster pain.
Regan and Marcus get trapped inside of a grain silo, but manage to get out. Doing so however, baits the monster to attack them even as they hide inside their family vehicle. Lee arrives as the creature attacks the car. He signs "I love you" to Regan and Marcus, then shouts aloud, drawing the monster away. The monster kills Lee, but his sacrifice buys his children enough time to escape and make it back to the house.
One of the monsters attacks Evelyn, Regan and Marcus inside the basement of their home. Regan uses her hearing aid to create feedback that hurts the creature. She then gets the idea to use a radio transmitter microphone to amplify the feedback, which nearly kills it. Evelyn finishes the monster off with a shotgun. Literally armed with this knew tactic, the family are now better prepared to deal with any encroaching threats.
