History[]
44 Reyburn Drive was the site of several gruesome and inexplicable deaths that occurred over a three-year span of time in the mid 2000s. These deaths had their origin however, in Tokyo, Japan. A woman from Cross River named Fiona Landers was working in Tokyo as a live-in nurse. The house she was working at was cursed with the spirit of a Japanese ghost known as an Onryō. The nature of this curse was to spread like an infection amongst residents - a curse that the infected would carry with them wherever they went. Fiona Landers was infected by the Onryō curse, or Ju-on, and brought it back home to Cross River. Possessed by the ghost of Kayako Saeki, she murdered her husband Sam and drowned her young daughter, Melinda, before taking her own life. The rage of the Onryō transferred to Melinda's spirit, and her ghost sought out fresh victims to satisfy her rage.
A local police detective named Goodman and his partner Wilson investigated the crime scene. Goodman felt uneasy about the affair and refused to entre the house. Wilson examined the crime scene and slowly began to lose his mind after a disturbing experience there.
Shortly following the murders of the Landers family, realtors Peter and Nina Spencer tried to sell their listed home. They were unaware of the deaths, and Peter encountered Melinda, not realizing that she was a ghost. Melinda infected Peter, who then returned home and killed his wife.
The following year, an elderly couple named William and Faith Matheson moved into the Landers' home. Wilson, obsessed with the house at 44 Reyburn Drive, continued to monitor the home as a cold case, often standing warily on the front lawn as its occupants went about their business. Goodman came to collect Wilson, who attempted to take his own life with his service revolver. After which, he was remanded to the care of a mental institution.
Faith Matheson, who was terminal and also suffering from dementia, became possessed by the spirit of Melinda Landers and stabbed her husband to death with a fork. She then cut off her own fingers with a knife and later staged her husband's corpse in the living room. An assisted suicide counselor named Lorna Moody was also a victim of Melinda's ghost around this time. Melinda appeared to her as she was driving down a highway. She lost control of the vehicle and swerved it deep into the woods where it crashed. Lorna was killed on impact.
By 2006, Goodman took on a new partner, a woman named Muldoon. She found herself involved the deaths emanating from 44 Reyburn Drive and was present when the rotted remains of Lorna Moody were discovered in her car. Goodman was reluctant to discuss matters relating to 44 Reyburn Drive, but ultimately revealed what had happened with his partner, Wilson. Muldoon visited Wilson in the mental hospital, and he told her about the presence of the curse.
Muldoon became a target of Melinda, who tried to trick her by disguising her image as that of her son, Burke. Muldoon saw through the deception and burned down the house at 44 Reyburn Drive. Believing that the curse had been lifted with the destruction of the house, Muldoon returned home.
