2001 Maniacs is an independent American feature film of the psycho-thriller and comedy subgenres. It was directed by Tim Sullivan with a screenplay written by Sullivan and Chris Kobin. The film was produced by BloodWorks, Raw Nerve and Velvet Steamroller Entertainment. It premiered in Canada at the Fantasia Film Festival on July 9th, 2005. It premiered in the United States at the Screamfest Film Festival on October 21st, 2005. The movie stars Robert Englund as Mayor Buckman, Lin Shaye as Granny Boone, Giuseppe Andrews as Harper Alexander, Jay Gillespie as Anderson Lee, Marla Malcolm as Joey, Dylan Edrington as Nelson, Matthew Carey as Cory, Peter Stormare as Professor Ackerman, Gina Marie Heekin as Kat and Brian Gross as Ricky.
The setting of the film is the fictional town of Pleasant Valley in rural Georgia. The townsfolk host an annual festival called "Guts and Glory" to honor those soldiers who had fallen during the American Civil War. Eight college students from the North travel through Pleasant Valley, but soon find themselves victims of the seemingly pleasant townspeople. To compensate for the loss of 2,001 Confederate soldiers during the war, the people of Pleasant Valley demand recompense and are prepared to slaughter 2,001 northerners.
